Sneinton Arts Trail
The 2008 Arts Trail will be taking place on
Sunday July 6th, between 12pm and 5pm
Our free Art Trail maps featuring all the venues and artists exhibiting will only be available on the day itself, from the reception at Green's Mill, Sneinton, Nottingham. The map will also be posted on this site over the weekend as a PDF to download.
Free parking is also available at the Green’s Mill car park on Windmill Lane.
Background
The Arts Trail is based on similar events that take place around the country, wherein the member artists open up their studios or homes for a day to showcase their work. Any one interested in following the trail, can pick up a map on the day itself and then follow it from venue to venue. All the sites are within walking distance of each other and to help identify them, the venues are marked by the Foot Step logo displayed outside the each building. At each venue the participants can view the arts on display, talk to the artists about their work, about their inspiration and how the pieces are created. They can also purchase the work on sale or even commission new pieces. As well as featuring member’s work we also encourages and invite non-members and guests to exhibit with us at this event.
If you are interested please email us.
(Please note; Guests and non-members work is only accepted at the discretion of the Sneinton Artists’ Group members with consideration towards content and available space at our venues. We also charge 10% commission from non-members on any work sold at this event.)
A brief history
This annual event is now in it's 9th year. It was established by local arts and crafts people in 1999. At the time they were part of a loose network of artists, who were either friends, colleagues or had come across each other at various community arts events. Many were also involved in either in the organisation, or had done art workshops for, the annual Sneinton Festival and Carnival, our local week long Community Arts event.
The group got together to organise the first Art Trail and held an open meeting that was well attended. To enable both promotion and funding they decided to organise it in conjunction with Festival Group and for it to take place during the festival week as part of the scheduled events. The first Art trail was a great success and so established itself as an annual event.
Over the past few years the Art Trail has included several studio based artists giving short demonstrations and workshops in their media and we have also included poetry recitals, performance, music and film screenings of locally made films and videos.
In 2002 we featured a community mosaic, with a series of panels created by local groups and individuals in workshops with artist Rachel Nuttal and which is now permanently erected on the exterior of Hermitage Community Centre.
Artwork and displays are also been exhibited in public buildings - the Green's Mill Lower Gallery, St Christopher's Church Hall, St Stephen's church and at the Hermitage Community centre where the years Sneinton Festival carnival parade creations and artwork have been on show.
Some open air venues are also included - the Forest Garden (an organic community garden) and the stunning permanent metal sculpture by the 'dragon man'' Robert Stubley at the junction of the Hermitage.
Due to the Art Trail's initial success the artists involved went on to establish the Sneinton Artist's Group, which now organises other events like the showcase exhibitions, art days and the art & craft workshops, which are aimed to promote all forms of private, professional and community arts and crafts in the area.
